Properly Maintaining Flame-Resistant Garments
Many of today's popular FR fabrics can be washed at home,
industrially laundered, or professionally dry cleaned. Regardless of the method employed,
one key point is to never use chlorine bleach or chlorinated detergents on FR garments.
Besides effecting the color, chlorine bleach can negatively alter the protective
properties of both inherent and treated FR fabrics. For best protection, additives such as
starch, fabric softeners, or antistatic dryer sheets should not be used either. With
repeated washings, accumulated residue from these products could form a microscopic
coating on the FR fabric. This coating could interfere with the thermal performance of the
fabric. Soap can also leave a film on fabrics so always wash FR garments in mild
detergent. Most FR garments should be washed no higher than 140 degrees F and dryed no
higher than 120 degrees F.
